Dental tartar

a hard substance forming on teeth which are not cleaned sufficiently by a continual accummulation of minerals from saliva in the dental plaque. A significant component of tartar is bacteria. Tartar chronically irritates the gum and it is a major factor leading to periodontitis. Once formed, it is necessary to have it regularly and timely removed during the dental hygiene treatment.
